MERLIN CP system
Communications
The MERLIN Remote CP Monitoring System uses GSM SMS messaging to report data from the field to a central HQ. This method was selected after careful consideration as being the most cost-effective for users:
- • Massive investment in infrastructure by the network providers
- • Excellent coverage in virtually all urban and semi-urban locations
- • Expanding coverage worldwide into remote/rural areas
- • Proven and reliable data communication method
- • Economic cost per SMS.
SMS communication is also used to set up MERLIN monitors in the field. No specialist equipment is required - just a cellphone! Once connected to the TR or test post, readings can be received directly to the cellphone and two text messages to the central software HQ are all it takes to configure the MERLIN unit. The CPSM software handles the rest automatically and, the following day, the first data report is received.
MERLIN monitors incorporate an internal GSM antenna which, in most locations, will be quite adequate. In weak signal areas, units can be equipped with an external antenna that improves the GSM signal.
All MERLIN monitors can be reconfigured remotely, either from the central CPSM software or from a cellphone in the field.
The MERLIN system is independent of network provider and Abriox will work with users to secure the most advantageous communication package in their country. We usually supply our monitors with a minimum 2-year airtime package – but we can also factory fit free-issued SIMs or supply monitors for users to fit their own SIMs.
A satellite-based communications module is currently under development for extremely remote areas to ensure 100% coverage for the MERLIN system.
