Nitrogen Sleeve Monitors

High and medium pressure pipelines passing under main roads, rivers or centres of population may require additional protection against corrosion. One of the methods used is to encapsulate the pipeline with a metal “sleeve” filled with Nitrogen, an inert gas that prevents the external pipe wall surface from corroding. The nitrogen gas is typically pressurised to 1 bar (100kPa).

For this method to be effective, the pressure of the nitrogen in the sleeve has to be maintained. This means operators must check the pressure in the sleeve periodically to make sure that it is not leaking.

If the pressure has dropped to an unacceptable level, the sleeve must be refilled with nitrogen, which can be a very labour-intensive activity since the gas containers are heavy and bulky to carry and the fill points are often difficult to access.

With many older pipelines encapsulated by sleeves, it is important that the nitrogen does not leak out and so the sleeves must be regularly checked to ensure that they are maintaining the correct pressure. Refilling sleeves is highly labour-intensive so, if the gas is leaking, the operator can monitor the pressure drop and schedule maintenance accordingly.

MERLIN Pipeline Sleeve monitors allow the pipeline operator to check that the sleeve is maintaining the required pressure without undertaking a site visit. They are typically installed in remote areas inside GRP Cabinets, M28 Posts and at Sleeve Fill Points. Remotely monitoring these key points eliminates routine site visits and labour can be freed for data interpretation and follow up.

Now the pipeline operator can check that the sleeve is maintaining the required pressure without undertaking a site visit. Even if the gas is leaking, the operator can monitor the pressure drop and schedule maintenance accordingly. In this way unnecessary site visits can be avoided.

The MERLIN measures the sleeve pressure automatically, checks that it is within specification and reports immediately if an alarm threshold is exceeded.

In addition to monitoring the gas pressure in the sleeve, the voltage of the batteries powering the sensor is also monitored and data is seamlessly sent in a management report to the system HQ where it is displayed and archived in Abriox’s MERLIN CPSM software or online via iCPSM.

Two types of sleeve monitor are available; the MERLIN Nitrogen Sleeve Monitor which fits inside an plastic post or kiosk and the MERLIN Communications Module with Nitrogen Sleeve Adaptor which fits inside a M28 or alternative sleeve fill point.

MERLIN DX Nitrogen Sleeve Monitors (3G/2G)

The MERLIN DX Nitrogen Sleeve Monitor is a compact, robust, long-life unit suitable for installation in a plastic post or kiosk. The MERLIN DX Communications Module with Nitrogen Sleeve Adaptor is more compact and can be installed in a M28 or alternative sleeve fill point. Both options monitor the pressure of nitrogen gas in a sleeve remotely. They communicate using SMS (text) messaging over the 3G/2G network. Data is automatically stored and transmitted in a management report to the system HQ where it is displayed and archived in the MERLIN CPSM software or accessed on-line via iCPSM.

Database Software

Data from MERLIN sleeve monitors is automatically stored and transmitted in a management report to the system HQ where it is displayed and archived in the MERLIN CPSM software (Desktop application) or accessed on-line via the internet based iCPSM.

Monitors can be configured to send their data to two HQs; changes made at one HQ are automatically updated at the other HQ with a full audit trail of all changes made to the system.

  • CPSM (Cathodic Protection System Manager) - PC based database software package for displaying, archiving and exporting data from MERLIN monitors.
  • iCPSM (Internet-based Cathodic Protection System Manager) - Online database software package for displaying, archiving and exporting data from MERLIN monitors.
